Phillips Park Cemetery Anglican Mortuary Chapel, Manchester

After walking back from Big Humpty with Rookie and exploring the Medlock Culvert earlier in the year we had spotted the chapel but didn’t have the time to take a look. With such an early start we found our way in and it turned out to be worthwhile, although the bell tower was unfortunately bricked up.
Linked with the history of the culverted sections either side of the cemetery, the red terracotta brick channel/gripper that the Medlock flows through was built after the 1872 floods which devastated the cemetery resulting in many bodies being dislodged and swept downstream towards the city centre.
