We both peered down in the darkness at the broken manhole key. Bent and cracked, with the lid not even budging a millimetre. Returned with another, still not even a millimetre.
Now as we walked along side the river Medlock the idea was struck to approach things from a different angle and as you might have guessed it worked. This overflow serves the Works 6 sewer in Manchester and apart from its concrete extensions this place is a thing of underground brickwork beauty at its best.
After the typical over under of a school sports day you’re confronted with a large tunnel archway with a staircase rising to a smaller 9ft or so mouth. Excellent images can also be viewed here.
